10 best trench coats for women this fall 2024

The trench coat is one of the most versatile and basic staples to have in your wardrobe this fall. From sleeveless trenches to belted coats, there are many approaches to consider when it comes to wearing this essential piece of outerwear.

The military-inspired garment takes its name from the trenches during World War I when army officers and soldiers on the front line needed a durable waterproof alternative to heavier wool coats.

The coat's original design had "a storm flap in the back of the coat as an extra protective layer from driving rain, epaulettes at the shoulders so officers could attach insignia denoting their rank and it was dyed in the color khaki so as to camouflage with their surroundings," mentions stylist Gloria Cospito.

Whether you're looking for a lightweight outerwear or something to pair with your outfits, trench coats are a lighter choice for mild to cold temperatures. Stylists share how to layer this timeless piece plus a few options to add to your wardrobe.

Burgundy is trending this fall and production associate Audrey Ekman is a fan of this trench coat. "This croc-embossed trench coat from Target is such a fun and easy way to rock the trend. I think it looks way more expensive than it actually is with its faux leather look, adjustable tie belt and rich maroon color," says Ekman.

"I’m a big proponent of a statement coat (why cover up your otherwise cute outfit with a boring jacket?) and I think this one can actually be treated as a neutral since it’ll match just about anything in your wardrobe," she adds.

When shopping for trench coats from Amazon, fashion expert Lindsey Bernay recommends checking the fabrication and opting for a polyester blend instead.

Embrace all the elements of a traditional trench coat without the extra bulk. This coat is made with a polyester blend to give that luxurious feel without the added cost. It's also designed with a fitted structure to add a feminine silhouette to your attire. Just take it from one satisfied Amazon shopper who rated this option five stars: "I wore it in Paris and felt like I blended in with the locals easily."

Size: XXS-XXL | Colors: 3 | Material: 90% polyester, 10% recycled fibers from textile waste

Bernay also recommends H&M for its versatile designs and different options. This coat is more structured and includes a removable tie belt for a traditional take on the garment. It comes in three neutral hues and has a looser fit for your fitted attires.

Fashion stylist Catherine Bibeau recommends Ralph Lauren as a statement piece for its classic silhouette. "Pair with tailored pants or jeans or dresses and skirts with tights," says Bibeau.

This in particular offers a double-breasted silhouette that could replace your everyday blazer.

Size: XS-3X | Colors: 2 | Material: 100% polyester

If you're looking for a more formal option, this London Fog trench coat can add elegance to most of your outfits.

Stylist Lucia Gulbransen recommends this brand for its timeless design. This trench features the classic shoulder epaulets, slanted welt pockets and belt that will elevate your casual attires. Plus, according to an Amazon reviewer, it's also very lightweight and "enough to cut the chill and keep you dry in the rain."

Size: XXS-3XL | Color: 1 | Material: 100% polyester

One of my favorite outerwear pieces is a black faux-leather trench coat I [Espinal] have in my closet. Whether you're wearing a casual or semi-formal look, this one can zhuzh up any style. It's designed with a soft bell, front buttons and lengthy cut to elongate your silhouette. If you can afford only one piece, I would opt for a black trench coat.

"It's the most important piece to build up a look, especially if is made from a special fabric," says Bernay.

Affordable luxury: Military Faux Leather Trench Coat

Size: XXS-XL | Colors: 2 | Material: 100% Polyurethane

I [Espinal] love this trench coat for its smooth texture and sturdy construction. It has become one of my favorite staple pieces to wear over nude dresses, denim and cashmere combinations. Because of its faux leather material, this is a garment that is easy to dress up or down.

"A pointed-toe bootie or a mule is a great way to elevate your night outfit as well," says Bernay.

Size: XS-XXL | Colors: 2 | Material: 100% cotton

With a great quality and soft material, this trench coat is perfect for busy days. It has a structured cut that doesn’t lay heavy on the body. Plus, you can score this one for 50% off. As someone who just purchased the last Gap collaboration, I [Espinal] love this option for its understated elegance and classic features.

If you live in a windy city, this coat will keep you protected as it encompasses a detachable hood. It also comes with two big pockets, a belt and a snap button closure for comfort. Bernardo specializes in modern designs for the woman who loves a mix of traditional and contemporary pieces.

Size: XS-XXL (regular, petite, tall, plus) | Colors: 3 | Material: 100% nylon

This particular trench coat serves many sizes. The design features a breathable technology called WeatherEdge which will keep you dry during rainy conditions. According to reviews, this coat provides great rain coverage and is ideal for 50-degree temperatures.

According to Bibeau, a trench coat typically has “a belted waist, [a] double-breasted front and epaulets.” She says, “They are often longer, extending to the knee or below.”

While the classic trench coat style has evolved throughout the years, Cospito notes that brands are revisiting its origins this season. “Designers are taking the bones of the classic trench and injecting a contemporary feel into this evergreen style. Whether it’s reimagining the coat in different materials, colors or shapes, the trench coat DNA is still there and as relevant as ever,” she adds.

There are many variations of the trench coat, plus numerous ways to style it. Before adding this piece of outerwear to your ensemble, though, Cospito suggests finding a trench that complements the hues of your layers. "Choosing a trench in a neutral shade will help it work with most of the items in your closet."

Next, both Cospito and Gulbransen recommend finding the right fit that’ll look flattering on your body. “You don’t want a trench coat too oversized with layers because it will add unflattering bulk. Also, you don’t want your trench to be too fitted, as you want to be able to move with comfort and ease,” adds Gulbransen.

You can also use the trench coat as a statement piece. “Start with the same color top and bottom and throw on a different color trench to make your coat the standout piece,” says Gulbransen. Tip: make sure the clothes underneath your outerwear piece are fitted.

“For a tied-together look, I like styling a trench coat over a dress or skirt and top, paired with pumps and a feminine top-handle bag,” adds Gulbransen.

Finally, consider the number of layers you will need to wear during winter before deciding on your desired size. “You want a fit that allows for layering sweaters or other cold weather tops underneath,” shares Cospito.

First, you want a loose-fitting and slightly bigger trench coat so it's easier to layer underneath. "Adding the dimensions of the outfit and using the trench as the top piece is the best way to wear this outerwear," says Bernay.

"Your coat’s fit is crucial when layering. You don’t want a trench coat too oversized with layers because it will add unflattering bulk. You also don’t want your trench to be too fitted as you want to be able to move with comfort and ease," says Gulbransen.

Additionally, you want to keep the layering pieces to "no more than two pieces as it will take away the focus of your trench coat," adds Gulbransen.

According to Bibeau, trench coats are ideal for "rainy or cool weather." She continues, "They are designed to be water-resistant, providing protection from light to moderate rain, and their longer length helps keep you warm in chilly conditions. They also offer a stylish layer for transitional seasons like spring and fall."
